Hello my dear friends! Today's Psalms of Discipleship reveals the heart of our Great God. He does care, really care, for you and for me. It is a Psalm of deliverance, a Psalm of what it means to have an intimate relationship with Jesus, a Psalm of the power of prayer, and a Psalm of promise and hope.

Psalms of Discipleship—Principle #22

Life Principles For Those Who Choose To Follow Jesus And Live The Discipled Life

Key Scripture: 14 "Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. 15 "He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 "With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation." Psalm 91:14-16

Core Value: Prayer

This passage of Scripture is quite personal. In June of 1998, I had this Psalm written on an index card and kept it in my shirt pocket, often reflecting upon it throughout the day. On July 2, I had a massive heart attack. During the aftermath, it was touch and go: either it was going to be graduation day and I would finally meet Jesus face to face, or He would extend my life on this earth. After my heart attack my wife found the index card on my dresser and she began to claim the wonderful promises mentioned in these verses. By no means are these promises a “formula” for getting what we want. Instead, the promises of God are based upon the relationship we have with Him, trusting Him for the outcome that will bring Him the greatest glory.

In His mercy, He delivered me. In His mercy, He answered and rescued me. In His mercy, He has added almost 15 years to my life. In His mercy, He will be there for you too.

Principle #22 & Personal Application: Quality disciples love and know the Lord and communicate with Him too.

• We pray because we love the Lord. Because we love the Lord, He desires to deliver us.

• We pray because we know His name. Because we know His name, He desires to set us securely on high.

• We pray because when we are in trouble we know that we can call upon Him. Because we call upon Him, He will answer us and rescue us and honor us.

• Because the Lord is our Shepherd, our Refuge, Our Mighty God, He will satisfy us with a long life and allow us to see His salvation.

Reflect & Respond: Some Really Good Questions To Ponder…

When I pray (especially when I am in trouble or burdened) do I do so out of a heart of love and worship or is my motive to relieve my discomfort?

There are many promises in this passage of Scripture for the disciple of Jesus. Which one resonates with me?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, may I always have a heart that is full of love for You. May I become fully acquainted with knowing Your name. Thank You for delivering me from the things that are harmful to my walk with You. Thank You for the provision of prayer where I can cry out to You and receive Your protection. Thank You for showing me Your great Salvation.

Psalms of Discipleship—Principle #32

Life Principles For Those Who Choose To Follow Jesus And Live The Discipled Life

Key Scripture: 1 Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life. 2 I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me. 3 I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. 4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; Those who would destroy me are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies; What I did not steal, I then have to restore. Psalm 69:1-4

Core Value: Prayer

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt so overwhelmed with stress that you had a hard time breathing normally? Have you ever faced a circumstance where you felt alone and very vulnerable? Have you ever been on the verge of losing all hope? If you have answered anyone of these questions with a YES, then it confirms that you are a normal disciple of Jesus. Some would refuse to admit any inkling of fear and being out of control. Those folks live in an unreal world.

Fortunately, for us, the Psalmist was real with his feelings. Writing from his own struggles, he offers us a glimmer into his life by committing his great challenges with great prayer to a great God. Are you going through great problems? Take them to a great God. When will you begin?

Principle #32 & Personal Application: Quality disciples realize when persecution comes their way, prayer is the tool that draws them closer to the Lord.

This is the testimony of the psalmist whose enemies had no mercy upon him. When our enemies attack us, we can relate to his experience.

• We can pray while the waters or persecution flood us: Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life.

• We can pray when it feels like we are sinking: I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.

Lord Jesus, thank You for drawing me close to You when it seems I am about to drown in the deep waters of persecution. May I always turn to You when trouble comes my way.

Psalms of Discipleship (Grace) Principles #18 & #19. May 19, 2012

Hello my dear friends! I trust that your soul is resting in the bosom of its greatest lover: the Lord Jesus. We live in a day and time where the distractions to our spiritual growth is challenged by lots of noise and chaotic circumstances. It is natural to be anxious, to be fearful, to be doubtful in the world in which we live. Because of grace, we can live a super-natural life that will free our soul from the things that seek to enslave our soul. The psalmist addresses the goal for the soul of the disciple of Jesus. May His grace grant us peace as we learn to teach our soul to "wait in silence" for God.

Core Value: Grace

There comes a desperate time in the life journey of the disciple of Jesus that enough is enough. For some, it seems that the harder we work for those pockets of solitude, the harder the work becomes. For some of us, an inner chaos within the soul has become the spiritual drug of choice. If rest, a quiet silence in the soul stared us in the face, we might not know what to do with it.

This is where grace comes in. Rightly applied, grace allows us to do something we cannot do in our own strength: to wait in silence for God only. Grace allows us to trust, to wait, to be filled with hope and to be empowered by His strength.

Principle #18 & Personal Application: Quality disciples seek to rest in the finished work of Christ.

• Grace allows a weary soul to wait in silence for God only. Grace helps us take a deep breath and rest in Him. “My soul waits in silence for God only.”

• Grace allows a weary soul to experience God’s salvation. Grace points us to the source of our salvation. “From Him is my salvation.”

• Grace allows a weary soul to confess God as one’s Rock and one’s salvation. Grace fills our heart with the uplifting truth that God is our rock and our salvation. “He only is my rock and my salvation.”

• Grace allows a weary soul to find in God a stronghold, a place of security. Grace leads us to His protection. “My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

When my life becomes rushed and filled with anxiety, what kinds of promises can I glean from this Psalm?

Life Principles For Those Who Choose To Follow Jesus And Live The Discipled Life

Key Scripture: 5 My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. Psalm 62:5-7

Core Value: Grace

Here it is again: the theme of waiting in silence for God only. Those of us who are disciples of Jesus know most of the “right” answers but may find the practical application of the truth to be a constant frustration. In this case, the right answer is to have a soul that is not a slave to chaotic circumstances. It is to have a soul that is well trained and not allow anyone or anything to dampen its focus upon God and Him alone. This sounds wonderful, but how?

Once again, grace is the key that gives our soul its proper maintenance. Grace opens up the eyes of the soul to behold the Lord’s gracious provision for us. Because of grace we see hope, we see the Rock of our salvation and our strength, we see our Stronghold who keeps us from being shaken, we see our Refuge. The better we can see through the lens of grace, the easier it becomes to have our soul wait in silence for God only.

Principle #19 & Personal Application: Quality disciples have learned the art of soul care by slowing down the hectic pace of life and finding the spiritual rhythms of life.

• Grace applied allows us to slow down the hurry of the heart and lets the soul wait in silence for God only.

• Grace applied allows us to experience hope from the Lord.

• Grace applied allows us to experience God as our rock and our salvation.

• Grace applied allows us to experience God as our stronghold, the rock of our strength, and our refuge.

When I feel hurried in my soul, what can I do to slow down and rest in God?

According to the Psalm, what characteristics of God can I meditate on when I feel uneasy and restless?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, by faith and by Your grace, may my soul rest in silence for You. My hope is from You. You only are my rock and my salvation. You are my stronghold and I will never be shaken. On You my salvation and my glory rest. You are the rock of my strength. My refuge is in You.

Psalms of Discipleship--Principle #41--Grace--October 22, 2011

Hello my dear friends! Greetings to you.

Everyone has problems (even the spiritual people do too). Today's Psalms of Discipleship is a grace-driven reminder that no matter how big our problems might be, God is much bigger. One of the keys to the experiencing the victorious Christian life is gaining the right perspective. When my problems become bigger than God, I have demeaned Him and reduced Him to my level. However, when I see my God is bigger than my problems, I have not only brought glory to Him but have taken that healthy step of faith that will help me walk through the problems. My view of God will be enhanced and I will be reminded that He is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Resting in His big promises even as I face my small problems,

Life Principles For Those Who Choose To Follow Jesus And Live The Discipled Life

Key Scripture: 1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah. Psalm 46:1-3

Core Value: Grace

How big is your problem? How big is your God? Herein lies two important questions that each disciple of Jesus must not only honestly ask, but also answer truthfully. When one goes through a personal life crisis, it may seem to be a problem that has no answer and no prospects of a good outcome. Be it a health problem, a career problem, or a relationship problem, we have all faced challenging circumstances that severely test our faith. We go into the problem knowing that God has an answer for everything. And yet, when we are fighting to keep our wits, we may doubt if He has an answer for our problem. . . this time.

Here is a lesson that we need to be constantly reminded of: it is much easier to study about and to know God’s character and His promises before the storm hits, so that when life becomes hard we know what we believe no matter what may come our way.

This is the same kind of faith the Apostle Paul experienced when he said, “…for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him…” 2 Tim 1:12

The quality disciple is able to trust Jesus with everything, knowing “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” That would include our world (with all our problems) too.

Principle #41 & Personal Application: The quality disciple lives in God’s protective care and experiences His comfort and perfect peace.

• It is by the grace of God we can find a safe refuge and strength when we are in trouble.

• It is by the grace of God we can resist the urge to panic and be overcome by a terrifying fear that would seek to overwhelm us.

• It is by the grace of God we can live in God’s care and experience His comfort and perfect peace.

What kind of refuge and strength does the Lord provide to me?

What kinds of things cause me to fear? How can this passage of Scripture encourage me when I become afraid?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are my refuge and my strength. You are my very present help when I am in trouble. Because of Your greatness and Your grace, I will not fear when my circumstances seek to fill my heart with doubt and unbelief. By faith, may I keep my eyes upon You.
